Cromwell - A historical and thriving small town

On New Zealand's South Island in Central Otago stands a small but lovely town called Cromwell. It is surrounded by rugged mountains, two rivers, and the crystal clear waters of Lake Dunstan. The town is known for its beautiful landscapes. 


Cromwell was originally established during the gold rush era in the 1860s, there retains remains of its heritage. There still stands well-preserved historic buildings and sites that offer glimpses into its past. The town's Old Cromwell Historic Precinct displays beautifully restored buildings, reflecting its rich history.


One of Cromwell's highlights is Lake Dunstan, a man-made lake formed by the damming of the Clutha River. When summer arrives, the lake offers many opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and swimming. And when winter comes, one of the five ski fields are perfect to hit the ski slopes.


Cromwell is also known for its vineyards and orchards, particularly its world-class wine production. Visitors can explore the surrounding vineyards and savour delectable local products. In addition to exploring the landscape, you can sample some of the world's finest Central Otago Pinot Noir.  


One of the most popular activities in Cromwell is fruit picking. There are many environmentally friendly orchards that are also low in spray. It is the perfect activity to do with friends or family since you can pick and eat an unlimited amount of cherries. The cherries look absolutely picture-perfect and taste incredible!













The town hosts various events throughout the year, the Cromwell Cherry Festival being one of them, where they celebrate the region's plentiful harvest. Additionally, people can explore nearby trails for hiking, mountain biking, and other exciting activities.


Cromwell stands as a unique slice of New Zealand’s South Island charm. With its perfect mix of history, natural beauty and thriving wine and orchard industry, the town is sure to captivate many travellers.
