Lake Pukaki - An etheral natural magnificence

Location: Mackenzie District, Central South Island, New Zealand

Annual visitors: 500,00 - 700,00 pers.

Lake Pukaki is an alpine lake in the South Island of New Zealand, cradled in the golden tussock of the Mackenzie basin. The lake is positioned at the foot of the Southern Alps. It is one of the most iconic sights of the South Island and the largest lake in the Mackenzie district (8 km wide and 15 km long). With its bright blue colour, it doesn’t seem possible that water can be this blue. The cause of this turquoise colour is the ‘glacial flour’ particles suspended in the water. Lake Pukaki presents an awe-inspiring panorama of the Southern Alps and the majestic Mount Cook that seems almost surreal. The drive along the edge of Lake Pukaki toward Mount Cook is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand.

The shores of Lake Pukaki offer many opportunities to explore and appreciate nature's beauty.  The available scenic walking tracks and viewpoints allow visitors to engage themselves in the atmosphere while admiring the glacial landscapes. Much like its neighbor Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki is also part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, making it an ideal destination for people interested in stargazing. During the nighttime celestial sightings and a load of stars are revealed in the sky, creating an unforgettable experience.

For those seeking adventure, the area surrounding Lake Pukaki offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, and even scenic flights, providing an up-close encounter with the beauty of this natural wonder.

To sum it all up, Lake Pukaki is the perfect place for travellers, because its ethereal beauty offers an escape into the world of natural magnificence.
